Binds Binds Series Volume 1 Rebecca Espinoza Lori Sabin 9781484018033 Books

This book began with the horrible reality of spousal abuse and slowly went downhill. Protagonist Ophelia is unable to escape her high-powered violently abusive husband ... or is she? When she is kidnapped and learns that she is a Mage who has been unable to crack the binds left on her by her deceased mother in an effort to protect her from her abuser. We also learn that she is capable to quite a bit of magic despite the binds when she is desperate enough. Being beaten is not enough to trigger her desperation?? We have a problem here.
Ophelia has been kidnapped by Mages who want to help her unleash her powers (which they know about despite the binds). She has to work with two males ... one whom she likes and who repeatedly gets her into trouble because of his own lack of foresight, and one whom she does not, who constantly gets her out of the trouble but is too arrogant for her. Ophelia's people skills leave something to be desired.
The book eventually flares out into a human-mage-elf and what-have-you conflict that in my view went beyond the pale...Leaving it as a conflict in which humans and mages need to unite to rid themselves of a tyrant would have been quite sufficient. And a slightly more rational Ophelia also would have helped.

Binds Binds Series Volume 1 Rebecca Espinoza Lori Sabin 9781484018033 Books Reviews

Brilliant!!! So, so GOOD!!

Binds is a book about the Mage and Fae. Ophelia is married to a monster, who constantly beats her. When she's kidnapped by her driver, little did she know it'd be the best thing that ever happened to her. She discovers she's a Mage, a fact that was kept from her by her mother as she was growing up, and is now kept from her by her husband and father in law. And when she learns to use her powers, she finally starts standing up for herself.

A war is brewing between the King and Queen of the Fae and the human world, and the Mage, are going to be caught up in it, with Ophelia being the Queen's main target.

Such a good book, I really, really enjoyed it. No actual romance but some hot tension. The characters are fantastic. Ophelia is a great main character, but I loved the secondary characters too, Spencer, Reece, Jinx, Cass and I'm really interested in seeing more of Allie. I think she'll be quite fun, tough and kickbutt too.

I was happy with the world building, and surprised by some of the revelations at the end. I can't wait for the next book. I'm dying to see Ophelia's reaction to Spencer.
Review
My Thoughts
- The Characters
I like Ophelia. She is a strong character, but also dumb. She is missing the biggest picture. Spencer knows her family history. The question is how does he knows. Spencer! He is so yummy. He is mysterious in his own right. I look forward to learning about him in the next book.
- The Story
This deals with mages and magic. The story overall was excellent and extremely well written.
- The World Building
This has amazing world building. Some of the scenes was crazy.
- The Subject Matter
This a scene where a husband beats Ophelia who is his husband. If it bothers you than don't read.
- The Ending
The ending is amazing. We also get some answers.
Overall This would be great book to read for mood of wanting adventure and mystery, but also magic. With a little bit of love. This sort of a coming to age story. The main character grows into a power of her own.
Questions
- Will I recommend this book? Yes.
- Will I continue on with the next book? Yes.
BINDS, is an urban fantasy novel from brand spankin' new on the scene author Rebecca Espinoza (wooooo, welcome welcome!!). I know Binds is advertised as adult UF, but it actually felt more like a new adult story to me.

Our MC is Ophelia Brand, the abused trophy wife of the Chancellor's (aka all-powerful head of state) son, who has been trying for years to escape her tortured life. She is virtually alone in the world, her mother having been murdered years prior and no other family to speak of. One night during a political function, she is kidnapped by the new family driver, a man named Reece and taken to a hidden downtown compound, where she is told that she, like the others gathered, are MAGES; a combination of human and fae.

All Mages have powers of some sort and Ophelia's are especially strong...or they would be, if her mother hadn't bound them before she died. This story is one of Ophelia realizing her strength, learning how to use her magic, and the rise of the resistance against the dictatorship (hello evil Chancellor/father-in-law) that is causing the genocide of all Mages.

Aaaand of course, there's the requisite love triangle between Ophelia, her rescuer, "good guy" Reece, and the leader of the resistance, hard-ass tough guy, Spencer.

I think I'm kind of leaning a bit more towards one of the guys than the other, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little pissy about the whole thing. Ophelia is still technically married, and though it wasn't a happy union, I'd much rather see her focus on herself and getting it together before embarking on a relationship. Even when her binds come off, she's still waiting for someone to rescue her. I like that she (eventually) recognizes this about herself, but I hope the next book shows a stronger, more independent Phee.

I feel like I'm preaching to all my girlfriends again.

A few notes/questions

-Where does this story take place? Europe? In a new country? I'm not really sure.

-The last 20% was a bit confusing, things were kind of thrown at you. There was just a lot going on in a very short span of time.

-As confusing as that last bit was, there WERE a few good twists thrown in there, so those were a nice surprise. I'm not sure if it's enough to make me run out and buy book 2 when it comes out, but my curiosity IS a bit peaked...

For a self-published debut novel, the author's writing (and editing) was very well done. And the cover...simply GORGEOUS! Definitely what caught my attention in the first place (great blurb too).

If you're a sci-fi/fantasy lover, check this one out. )
