I didn't pick up this book because it is a "romance," though it could be described that way. I was interested in the story of Princess Kaiulani, the last of the Hawaiian royal line. It is both romantic and tragic, but Bodie Thoene gives it a twist.

First of all, it is a story within a story: a modern-day young woman is researching old Hawaii. Then we walk into old Hawaii, and here Bodie's writing does not disappoint. The historical and literary content elevate the book above what you'd expect in a common "romance." While traveling with the Princess to England, for schooling, the reader absorbs the sights, sounds, and literary environment of the day.

The characters also attend a "revival" meeting in London. "Gypsy" Smith preached and had an impact upon the Princess and several others in the story. But instead of merely inserting a little "religion" into the storyline, the reader sees how this event becomes a pivot point for what follows.

Tragically, the Princess discovers that her beloved nation may be overthrown. A power struggle has grown between the Hawaiian monarchy and "progressive" elements in the islands. Kaiulani's aunt, the Queen, is under house arrest, and the Crown Princess returns to her homeland, determines to speak for her people to those who will listen.

What happens next? Well, if you read the history books, you'll find a tragedy like Hamlet. If you believe Bodie, it's more like the Merchant of Venice . . .

Wish I could meet the author one day at a local Starbucks . . .okay, Bodie, do you really have some inside information?

Love Finds You in Lahaina Hawaii Bodie Thoene 9781935416784 Books Reviews

Love Finds You in Lahaina, Hawaii is like three different stories rolled into one. There's the "present day" which is 1970s. Sandi Smith's husband has been missing in action from the Vietnam War for five years. She flies to Hawaii to work on a paper for a history book. This is one of the stories I liked the best. The author's description of Hawaii and the quaint village of Lahaina seriously made me wish I could close my eyes and wake up there. I have not read any of this author's work before though I know she is very acclaimed. Bodie Thoene did an awesome job with Sandi and the ache she feels for her missing husband even after all these years.

The second story line, the one Sandi is researching, is the Princess of Hawaii, Kaiulani Cleghorn. The point of view alternates back and forth between 1970s and 1890s. Kaiulani, with her sister and friend, are sent away to England due to the danger Kaiulani may be in from those who wish to take over the throne. This is the other story line I enjoyed, reading about the two love interests that spring up there.

The third story line, mid-way through, gets a little melodramatic and long-winded, when Kaiulani returns to fight for her people. A reason to read the Love Finds You series is the sweet romances and this political turn was a little too heavy. On it's own, this would be a great novel going into a little more depth with the whole politicial thing and danger, but because of it in this series, it seemed oddly out of place.

There is a neat little twist in the end that clears a few things up.

All in all, a good book, though a little too long and too serious for this series. Two books I have really enjoyed are Love Finds You in Wildrose and Love Finds You in Daisy, the best out of the series (that I've read) so far!
I really like this book. Very well written. But, of course, every book I have read by the Thoene's is well written and very good. They are great authors. I really enjoyed that this was a historical fiction. I really did not know the history behind how Hawaii became part of the United States. It was really pretty sad. Thank you Thoene's for another great book!
I enjoy historical fiction, especially of places i know well. I pass the Pioneer Inn of Lahaina every day and am tempted to ask about the Hawaiian flag in the upstairs window? Did Aunty Hannah really live there? Of course not, but the story was that alive for me.
Bodie and Brock Thoene are two of my favorite authors, and this book did not disappoint. With exotic settings and an interesting story line (based on the actual history of Princess Victoria Kaiulani), it was a great read from the beginning to the end. A+!
I've read several of Bodie Thoene's books and have only praise for her historical fiction which always includes the input of Christianity, value intact. I don't believe this book has the greatness of her WWII novels, but it is especially interesting if you've never been to the Islands. Her knowledge of the history, customs and people is most interesting and I certainly reccomend it as a light read.
In 1973 Sandi Smith comes to Hawaii as part of a research project, as she tries to deal with the pain of not knowing the fate of POW husband. While there is meet Hannah, the oldest living woman in Lahaina. While talking to Hannah she learns about Princess Victoria Cleghorn, the Crown Princess of Hawaii and the two men that are vying for her. Clive, the son of her English guardian and Andrew, a young man she meant of a ocean trip. But time of are changing a Hawaii will not be the same.
"Love Finds You in Lahaina, Hawaii" by Bodie Thoene was a good book. I have to admit that I didn't know much about Hawaiian history and I have to admit that book makes me want to learn more. This was a really good book, with interesting characters.
I liked the book because the authors did a great job of describing the culture and the beauty of Hawaii. Our my son lived there 9 years and we visited the place. You could practically smell the flowers as you read. Our son spoke about aloha frequently. He said it is a precious attitude of love and acceptance. The authors do a great job of describing it in daily life. Most people don't know the story behind the Hawaiian Islands becoming a state and this is historical fiction about that process.
